Summertime Vaping Tips

Summer is here. You can feel the excitement in the air as everyone gets ready for their vacations, summer cookouts, and day trips. With all fun that summer may bring, vapers need to keep somethings in mind when it comes to your eliquids/vaping device. We thought we’d gather some of those tips here for you to help you out this summer. Vacations and picnics are enough to plan without having to worry about your vape on top of that!

Summer Heat & Vape Safety:

With the summer heat, it’s extremely important to not leave your vaping device or extra batteries in your car or in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. When temperatures outside range from 80 degrees to 100 degrees, the temperature inside a car parked in direct sunlight can quickly climb to between 130 to 172, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This makes your car one of the most dangerous places to store your vaping device, eliquids, and batteries. Lithium batteries, like the ones we use regularly for vaping devices, can actually break down in high heat. When the cells break down inside the battery, this causes it to weaken and they won’t hold their charge as well. It’s important to keep your vaping device, eliquids, and batteries out of direct sunlight and places where the temperature can rise drastically in a short period of time. Besides the damage the heat can cause to your equipment, you’ll also notice that your eliquids can get thinner. This can also make your tank/drippers leak more frequently when you use warm or hot eliquids; also affecting your coils causing them to burn out faster. It may break down your nicotine and possibly change the flavor of your eliquids if left in the heat for long periods of time. But the occasional 5 minutes in a car won’t be too hard on your vape, just use your best judgment.

There are a few different ways that you can avoid the summer heat when you have a vape. First, you can power it down and carry it with you. You can check on it regularly to ensure that your device doesn’t become too hot. Your equipment won’t be affected by your body heat. You can also just pull your batteries out if you are concerned, and place them in a battery case. Do not carry your batteries without a case. Batteries can come into contact with loose change, keys or metallic items that could lead to your battery shorting out. This is one of the most common things that we hear in the news: “Vape Explodes!”. These types of incidents could have been easily avoided if a battery case was used. Moral of the story: always use a battery case!

If you are going somewhere where you’ll be outdoors for an extended period of time, you can always store your equipment in a cool shady spot. It may still get hot, but it won’t be as hot as sitting directly in the sun. If you still don’t feel comfortable or just want to go that extra step, you can pack everything in a small cooler. It doesn’t have to be a huge one, it could be something as simple as an insulated lunch bag/box. Grab some ice packs and put them into ziplock bags (to prevent any condensation from getting onto your equipment) and ta-da! You have your own little vape bag! Perfect for trips to the beach or your family reunion at the park!

Summer Vacations & Regulations:

The best part of summer is the vacations! You got the perfect swimsuit, everything’s packed and you are just about ready to go. But then you realize, what about my vape? We often get a lot of questions regarding vapes and traveling. It’s important to know whether or not the places you are going even allow vapes on the plane, ferry or even on the boardwalk.

If you are flying for summer vacation, always double check your specific airline and TSI’s regulations regarding vaping devices/eliquids. Since the FDA has started to regulate the vapor industry, regulations on flights may change more over the next few years. To be sure, always double check just before your trip to make sure you don’t have any unwelcome surprises when you get to the airport. Better to safe than sorry. If you are flying out of the country for a trip, you’ll also need to check that country’s regulations as well. Some countries have banned vaping altogether while some have heavy restrictions on vaping. In some of the countries that restrict e-cigarettes, vaping may still be legal but the laws in place might make e-liquid that contains nicotine illegal. So you could fly to that country with your vape, but you may not be able to bring it home with you. Plus, you could possibly be fined on top of everything. If you really need a nicotine fix while on vacation in some of the countries listed and you don’t want to smoke, maybe you should invest in some nicotine gum or patches to get you by until you get back home. If you plan to travel with your vape you should check the local/state/country laws, as they change constantly. So do not count on this list!

Countries where vaping is currently banned:

  • Argentina
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Brazil
  • Brunei
  • Cambodia
  • Columbia
  • Egypt
  • Indonesia
  • Jordan
  • Malaysia
  • Mexico
  • Oman
  • Panama
  • Singapore
  • Taiwan
  • Tajikistan
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Uraguay
  • Venezuela
  • Vatican City

Other countries where vaping is heavily restricted include:

  • Australia
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Japan
  • Hong Kong
  • Hungary
  • Iran
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • South Africa
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • India

Even if you aren’t traveling outside of the country, some states have restrictions or bans on vaping. For example, Ocean City MD  broadened it’s smoking ordinance (for the beach and boardwalk) to include vaping. Smoking ordinance violations are subject to a fine of up to $500. In addition to police and public safety aides, citations can be also be issued by recreation and park officials, animal control officers, fire department officials, Beach Patrol members, building officials or licensing inspectors. The best tip for traveling with you vape is: CHECK THE LOCAL REGULATIONS. It will save you from frustration, fines and even possible jail time.

Stay Hydrated:

The summer can be hot! Despite the fact that all heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, each year an average of about 658 people succumb to extreme heat, according to the Center of Disease and Prevention. Vaping can actually help to dehydrate you, especially if you are a heavy user. It’s important to remember to drink plenty of water through the day, as your body won’t show any clear signs that you need more water until you’re already dehydrated. These include dry eyes, dry mouth, dark urine, and fatigue. If you notice any of these signs, increase your water intake immediately. Drinking electrolytes will also help your body to retain more moisture. However, the best thing to do is to prevent dehydration before it happens, so make sure you drink enough water throughout the day on those hot summer days! If you’re drinking diuretic drinks like coffee, tea, and alcohol, make sure you don’t forget to drink glasses of water in between.

Be Respectful:

As we have mentioned early here and in previous blog posts, the vaping industry is in the crosshairs of the FDA. Regulations will soon start to arise on the federal level, just like they have been in the State levels. As an industry, we are trying our very best to keep our voices heard by our government officials. But as a group we need to keep in mind it’s also about how we present ourselves as well. Just like that old saying goes, actions speak louder than words. We need to act responsibly and respectfully when we are in public and vaping. This is just common sense, and common courtesy. Don’t blow vapor in people’s faces. Try not to vape around kids if it can be avoided. If you are at a public area surrounded by others, walk away to vape. To be respectful of other’s, it’s not that big of a deal to step aside to vape is it? When the opportunity presents itself, then you can educate those who have questions/misconceptions. It helps those within the vaping community to really show these officials what we represent and why vaping is so important to us.
